About the Original FRONT (1942–1945)
FRONT was a photo-centered propaganda magazine published between 1942 and 1945 under the supervision of the Imperial Japanese Army and with the cooperation of major media organizations. Modeled after the Soviet magazine USSR in Construction, it made innovative use of photomontage, dynamic layouts, and modern typography to promote Japan’s military power, industrial strength, and national unity to audiences both at home and abroad. The original production brought together leading photographers, designers, and editors of the time—Hiroshi Hara, Tarō Okamoto, Ken Domon, and Yōnosuke Natori among them—whose avant-garde visual expressions remain highly regarded today. As both a wartime propaganda publication and a landmark in 20th-century graphic design, FRONT stands as an essential historical document.
The reprint edition faithfully reproduces the original visual format and includes scholarly commentary at the end of each volume, enhancing its value as a research resource.
The series is supervised by Seiichi Tagawa.
