1930年代の上海を舞台に、国際都市の繁栄と退廃を風刺的に描いたスケッチ集。
フリードリヒ・シフ（Friedrich Schiff, 1908–1968）はウィーン出身の風刺画家で、1930年頃より上海に滞在し、当時の外国人社会と現地文化の交錯を独自のユーモアで描いている。
本書はその代表作にあたり、手彩色図版21枚を収録。装丁は竹文様の布装蛇腹仕立てで、タイトル「Maskee」は中国沿岸のピジン英語で「かまわない」「気にしない」を意味し、雑多で享楽的な上海の気分を象徴しています。内容は、チャイナドレスの女性、リキシャー、欧米人の社交場、歓楽街、阿片窟など、当時の上海の異国情緒を軽妙な筆致で描いて、皮肉と諧謔をまじえた風刺画としても高く評価されているそうです。
扉下部に著者自筆サイン “Schiff” 入り。巻末にはThis is book number A 391の記載があり、限定番号入り手彩色本であることが確認できます。発行年・発行者の明記はないが、海外資料では1939年頃、上海にて自費出版とされています。
