 Evans & Shaw-Shoemaker

Encountering Evans & Shaw-Shoemaker Materials (英訳 Evans & Shaw-Shoemaker資料に触れさせる)

“General Education” is one characteristic offered by the International Christian University as part of its Liberal Arts education. This curriculum requires students to take two classes from each of the three disciplines: Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science. The completion of six subjects in total is a prerequisite for graduation.

All students enrolled in ICU are encouraged to acquire well-balanced basic knowledge based on broad perspectives and to understand academic methodology, on top of which they can build their field of concentration. The course includes regional or multi-disciplinary studies such as Japanology, Environmental Studies and Peace Research, to name a few.

Introduction to American Studies is one of the courses in the curriculum that I am responsible for.  Every semester, I have a wide variety of students, from freshman to senior year, with different majors or majors on pending. Each class can only take up to 150 enrollments in the Liberal Arts course. When we have more applicants, the registration list is reduced randomly by computer.  For the spring semester in 2010, I had 86 enrollments for this class.

We discuss issues such as freedom of speech, patriotism, separation of church and state, state and national flag, and pledge of allegiance, mainly focusing on Early America from the colonial period to the Revolution, or furthermore on religion, politics, and foreign relations during the founding period. As a comparative study, we naturally apply the topics to Japanese society and discuss issues relating to Hinomaru & Kimigayo (Japanese national flag and national anthem), the Japanese attitude toward religion, freedom of speech etc.

At the same time, I give instruction on how to use and approach primary and secondary sources, required for thesis writing, by presenting specific examples and going over general methodology. In this regard, I always refer to the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester (Massachusetts), introduce the value and significance of Early American Imprints, its quintessential collection, and give guidance on how to use it.

However, this sort of introduction does not necessarily generate frequent use of the materials. For modern Japanese students, to whom the issues of early America are not immediately relevant, it can be challenging to read and understand primary documents.

To address this issue, I give one very simple assignment. It is to access digital materials either from the library or from the student’s home PC, call for Early American Imprints, pick one subject that draw his/her attention, open related materials, make an outline of the content on one piece of A4 paper (as for a book report) and submit it with a cover page.

One week later, I got a pile of reports from students with generally very positive feedback. While many have some difficulty in understanding in full the original documents, which are written in the English of the 17th and 18th century, most are able to read through the documents and summarize them in their reports. I observe from those reports that the students experience excitement from accessing materials dating from so far back in history. Their reports have covered topics as diverse as manufacturing procedure for cheese, hymns, advertisement for theater plays, witch trials, and illegal business transactions, all good representations of early American society.

Some intriguing comments include, “It was just as if the original materials were at hand…I am thrilled to realize that I can use those materials at any time.” or “It was not until I had this assignment that I knew about Early American Imprints. I can view historical documents in their original condition and obtain firsthand knowledge of early American history.” or “It was an interesting experience to easily access materials published in 1803. Occasionally, it was difficult to read some of the English texts. Nonetheless, this is a supreme primary source for examining people’s lives back in the old days.”

One student summarizes his information retrieval experience: “It was an extraordinary experience for me to encounter primary materials written and read by people living in the 17th century. As a history major, there will be countless opportunities for me to converse with people from past times through those kind of first-hand documents. Through these exercises, I would like to continue my academic study.”

Encountering top-class materials like Early American Imprints at an early stage of college life would certainly have decisive impact on students for their future research activity. The quality of the student’s report is not what matters at this point. Taking a glimpse at 17th and 18th century society by accessing primary resources from home – the impact this excitement can bring about is unlimited.
