このアフリカ大陸に関する書籍のコレクションは、アフリカに興味を持ったアイルランド大学の一講師が収集したもので、1849年から1982年にかけて出版された書籍145タイトルで構成されています。全て英語による刊行物です。
本コレクションは、19世紀末から、近代における多数の独立共和国の出現に至るまでのアフリカの歴史と発展を多方向から捉えるという意志のもとに収集されました。
旅行・探検・歴史・風習・地理・民俗・考古・伝記・宗教・布教・医療・政治・経済・社会学等に関するトピックがコレクションの対象となっています。本コレクションに収集された書籍の特徴的なこととして言えることは、写真・挿絵本が多いということです。
