CAHUSAC, (L.) DE.
La danse ancienne et moderne ou traité historique de la danse.
The Hague, J. Neaulme, 1754. 3 parts in 1 vol. 12mo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt, marbled edges. XXXII, (4), 168, (18); 180, (18); 168, (12) pp.
Rare first edition of a classic on dancing by Louis de Cahusac (1706-1759). As the author explains in his lengthy preface, he wrote the book to correct the views held about the ballet and theatrical dance, and especially those expressed by Abbé De Bos in his "Réflexions sur la Poësie et la Peinture", published in 1746. In this work De Bos stated that the dance of the Greek and Roman theatre was essentially different from the dance of his time, with Lully as its greatest composer and dancing masters like Feuillet as choreographers. Therefore, De Bos called singing and dancing in classical antiquity "récitation" and "saltation".
Our author however, is convinced that there is no basic difference between any people's singing or dancing, only a difference in efficacy. One has only to look at the dancing movements of the classical statues and at the large dancing terminology of the classical authors. And on the other hand, our author is not convinced that with modern so-called "noble dancing" the ultimate is reached. Ballet and dancing in the theatre can always change and grow still "better", although people are inclined to stick to the reigning fashion in art and call new "effects" exaggerated or in bad taste. So a "poetic treatise" on dancing is called for, presenting the "manner of dancing" from the beginning of history to the author's day, because only then a dancer will be able to know exactly what he is doing and what is right or wrong in his search for the perfection of his art.
The first part discusses the usefulness of theory for all the arts, how to come by theoretical knowledge, the origin of dancing and its first application, etc., and describes the sacred dances of the Greeks, Jews, Egyptians, Hellenists, Christians, Turcs, etc. The second part is devoted to the profane dance and describes the dances of the Ancients at public feasts, at private feasts, some Greek and Roman dances, the dance at funerals, the use of arch-mime at the funerals of the Romans, the dance of the Ancients as physical exercise, the different morals of the Greeks, the views of the philosophers, laws about dancing, the dances of the Lacedemonians, etc. And the third and last part treats the birth of the theatre, the theatre dance of the Greeks and Romans, etc., and discusses mime, pantomime and modern Italic dancing. At the end of each part an index is given. The book became a classic in its field and is still used by all theoreticians and historians of ballet and dancing.

Contemporary wrappers (back cover loose), uncut. With 4 engraved plates on 2 large folded sheets by B. de Bakker after the plates in the original French edition, charmingly illustrating the water-jacket and water-pants discussed in the text. (2), VIII, 139, (1) pp.
First and only Dutch edition of an interesting treatise describing and depicting the practical use of a newly invented life jacket (water jacket and water pants) enabling men to remain in water for extended periods of time and to walk upright through the deepest waters or to enable people to execute work to be done in water, deep or shallow.
Jean Baptista de la Chapelle (1710-1792) was a mathematician and one of the contributors of the Encyclopaedia of D'Alembert. He is the inventor of the word 'Scaphander', which is derived from the Greek word 'scaphos' (boat) and 'andros' (man). The treatise has been translated into German in 1776 and into Dutch (the present edition) from the Traité de la construction théorique et practique du scaphandre, ou du bateau de l'homme, first published by De La Chapelle at Paris in 1775. The Dutch translation was made by Cornelis van Engelen (1722-1793), a Dutch scientist, member of several foreign Academies of Sciences, and translator also of Buffon. Van Engelen dedicated the book to the Directors of the Dutch National Life-Boat Society, founded at Amsterdam in 1767, because the author considered these swimming devices also of importance for use of people not able to swim and for preventing people from drowning.
The present  flotation suit was according to the author a big improvement on earlier inventions by Thevenot, Digby, Wynman, Gelaci, and especially on the more recent invention by Wilkinson. La Chapelle's invention consisted of a sleeveless jacket covering the upper body, and a pair of trousers, the jacket comprising floats to transform the wearer so to speak into a human boat, as is indicated also by the French title. The floats could be altered to allow the wearer to submerge. The floating suit was originally designed for military purposes, and the suit was accompanied by a special hat in the shape of a swan. This hat served both, to disguise the person in the water in order to enable him to approach the enemy unnoticed, and to carry ammunition over the water without wetting it. The plates beautifully depict the floating suits, both in detail and in full use.
Good copy.- (Spine dam., back wrapper and title loose).
