本誌は、第二次世界大戦前に刊行されていたフランスのグラフ雑誌。写真家でもあるLucien Vogelにより創刊され、１９２８年３月からドイツによるパリ占領に至る１９４０年５月（６３８号）迄別冊を含めて６５０冊程が発行されました。アメリカのライフ（Ｌｉｆｅ）誌と並んで高く評価されている雑誌です。ローバート・キャパなどの著名な写真を掲載したことでも知られています。ヨーロッパにおけるフォトジャーナリズムの研究にとって貴重な資料です。

| １８５３年｛嘉永６年｝７月１４日のペリー来航の際、同行したドイツ人画家Wilhelm Heineは、１８５６年に「日本周航記」を著しています。その折、彼をアシストしたEliphalet Brown Jr.は、ハイネの描いた貴重な絵の内、６枚を上質の手彩色石版に作成し、1855年に出版しました。.印刷は石版印刷のSarony社によるもの。本葉はそのうちの１枚で、若干の修復がありますが、良好に額装して保存されております。 |

“Illustrated London News”誌の特派員画家として、１８６１年に来日し、その活躍がく評価されたCharles Wirgmanが英国の風刺雑誌「PUNCH」をモデルに創刊したのが本誌「Japan Punch」です。「ポンチ絵」と言われる独特の作風で、幕末・維新期の動乱期を筆写しています。1862年から1887年迄英文で刊行されました。
